Nelson Monument is a memorial tower in Edinburgh, Scotland. Built between 1807 and 1816, the 32m tower is situated on top of Carlton Hill. The original design was a Pagoda-style prepared by Alexander Nasmyth, but it was deemed too expensive. At the top of the photo you can see the "time ball" that allowed ships in the nearby port to set their chronometers. The mechanism was installed in 1852 and a wire ran from the city Observatory to the tower to keep track of the time. Approaching 1:00pm, the ball would be raised. At exactly 1:00pm the ball was dropped. By 1861, the decision was made to establish a 1:00pm gun as well to provide an audible signal in case the tower was obscured by fog. The tower was restored in 2009.

Looks can be deceiving. Kawasaki Warehouse was an arcade in Kawasaki, Japan. The interior and exterior were designed and modelled to look like a building from Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong. Kowloon walled city was an ungoverned area that was once considered the most densely populated urban area in the world. With no health regulations or building codes, the city was a place with no laws. Kowloon walled city was eventually demolished in 1994. Unfortunately, Kawasaki warehouse is now closed.

Big Ben. Yes, this is the clocktower Big Ben in London, England. During a visit in 2019, the tower was under a restorative maintenance program. This required the construction of scaffolding that wrapped around the tower for its fill height. The tower is under renovation due to general decay. In 2020 additional defects were discovered including WW2 bomb damage, pollution damage, asbestos, lead paint, and damaged clock dials requiring specialist repair crews. We can't always get the perfect glossy post-card photo, but it is always good to be reminded that there is a lot of work that goes into maintaining and repairing our cities, landmarks, and history.

The Mode Hal Isen tower in Nagoya Japan is an educational facility with three schools. The building was designed by Nikken Sekkei and constructed by Obayashi Corporation. The curvy tower greets visitors walking out of the main train station. The use of triangular steel frames for the exterior glazing helps give the appearance of a smooth curvy glass finish.

#granada is a hilly city with winding roads. The typical layout of the city has 4 to 5 story #buildings that have shops on the road level and apartments above. This method of #urbanplanning allows for a more #walkablecity and good use of space. This helps build a sense of community and local culture within a city. This is not the norm in North America. Perhaps we can learn a little bit from Europe in terms of building #sustainablecities.

#kingscrossstation is a major train hub in #london🇬🇧 The platforms are beside rows of large #masonry #arches which support large #steel frames for the ceiling of the station. The #trainroute from #londontoedinburgh is a popular route. Even though it is often cheaper to fly the distance, train is the preferred choice for many travellers. This goes to show that there are more factors than just cost that determine a person's choice in their method of travel. The train is a more sustainable method of travel, which will hopefully grow in popularity compared to short-haul flights.

The #hotsprings of #noboribetsu are fed by the bubbling water beneath the park in #japan. Hot springs, called #onsen in Japanese are a very important part of #japaneseculture. The natural hot water also provides opportunities for the development of #geothermal infrastructure to help address the future #energy demand of Japan. The latest article on the engineeringnomad.ca discusses the ways in which geothermal projects have been implemented successfully to local communities within Japan.

The #sagradafamilia in #barcelona has been under construction since March 1882. Antoni Gaudi was the chief architect who finished the design. The church was only one quarter complete by the time Gaudi died in 1926. The design blends gothic architecture with a nouveau style. The interior is decorated with stain glass and towering stone columns. It is projected to be complete in 2026.

Formerly called the #johnhancockcenter, the #skyscraper at 875 North Michigan Ave in #chicago is a 100-storey steel #icon. The building is 457m (1500ft) at its highest point. Construction started in 1965. Construction was stopped in 1967 when the tower was 20 stories tall. Settlement readings of the soil were as much as they expected for the final height of the building. A solution was finally developed and the construction continued until it was completed on 1969.

The #caixaforum in #madridspain has a #verticalgarden on one of its exterior walls. Vertical gardens help increase greenspace while reducing the #heatislandeffect in cities. In order to save on weight on the wall assemblies, some vertical gardens reduce the amount of soil for the plants by using nutrient and mineral rich water to hydrate the plants.
The skeleton of this #tokyo #skyscraper is #steel. In countries with high #seismic activity, #buildings need to be #engineered to account for the lateral loads experienced during an earthquake. Steel offers a better strength to weight ratio compared to concrete for seismic applications. If you look closely in the photo, you can see where holes have been cut out of the #steelbeams to save on weight where the added steel is not required for the overall strength that is required.
#thetreasury (Al-Khazneh in Arabic) is located in the ancient city of #petra , Jordan. Buildings in the city are carved out of the sandstone rock face. Although the Treasury is one of the most iconic structures, there are dozens of other buildings at the site. The city flourished during the time of the Nabatean Kingdom due to the #waterdistribution system in the city. The pathways though the city are lined with channels cut into the rock that used to hold clay pipes. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Nabateans had dams and cisterns that helped control flash floods which occurred in the region. Petra was a major trading hub until the 12th century, when it was abandoned. It was rediscovered in the 19th century.
Perched on top of the foothills of the #himalayas are #mountaincomunities that dot the sky. Many of these communities are not accessible by road, only by foot. This poses a whole host of challenges, like transporting gas for cooking and heating. Some villages have gravity ropeways, which are similar to the ones shown in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAtIBXvnWFo by #practicalaction
